Dan Scanlan, often called Cool Hand Uke, has played ukulele and written songs for it for 60 years. He lectures on the history of the ukulele and teaches it at the Madelyn Helling Library and Sierra College. He created and has directed the Strum Bums Ukulele Extravaganza Rescue and Relief Band for the last 26 years, playing in retirement, convalescent and assisted living homes, schools and festivals. He served as the master of ceremonies, workshop presenter and performer at the International Ukulele Ceilidh in Nova Scotia, Canada, for five years. Meets the Ukulele, an international project that included workshops and concerts in Funchal, Madeira, and a feature performance at the World’s Fair in Lisbon, Portugal in 1998. His performances include ukulele, guitar, rajão, braguinha, harmonica and autoharp. He lives with his wife, Joan Buffington in rural Nevada City.
